IYC 2011

Report on the Activities Organized for Celebrating International Year of Chemistry -2011 at JNV Ernakulam

As per the guidelines obtained from the commissioner ,Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti ,New Delhi our Vidyalaya took active interest in the celebration of IYC -2011 in a befitting manner.

The theme of IYC-2011 is ‘’CHEMISTRY-OUR LIFE,OUR FUTURE’’ and focuses on the achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the well being of the humankind. As we know the 63^rd general assembly of the United Nations Organization adopted a resolution proclaiming 2011 as the International Year of Chemistry with the objectives as follows;

1.Improve the understanding and appreciation of Chemistry by the public

2.Promote the role of Chemistry in contributing solutions to global challenges

3.Build capacity by engaging young people with scientific disciplines ,especially the scientific method of analysis developed by hypothesis , experiment ,analysis and conclusions.

The school atmosphere was in fact charged with Chemistry.       The following special events were scheduled and enacted in line with the objectives of IYC-2011.     A formal inaugural function was held on 5^th August 2011. Dr. M M Joseph ,Associate Professor &  Head of the Depatment of Chemistry M A College     Kothmangalam inaugurated the celebration and Mr. Ignatius Lecturer in Chemistry MA College who is an alumnus of JNV Neriamagalam felicitated on the occasion.  Mr. A P Issac Superintendent of District Agricultural Farm unveiled the logo  of TOPEC , Teens  Outreach Progressive  Environmental Club  organised for the cause of environmental awareness  and protection  . The TOPEC  executive body  consists of  :

There are 5 coordinators and    20 active  members  , each  from classes XI , X ,  IX   and VIII.

The Principal is the Patron of the Club and the teachers of Science Department are Sponsors.

The following interschool competitions were conducted as part of celebration of IYC 2011 by  participating students from  neighbouring schools.

 In Quiz on Environmental chemistry.  -  First place won by Mathew j Anchery and Basil Stephen of Mar Basil HSS Kothamagalam.  Second place won by Aibin Issac and Jithin Joseph of JNV Neriamangalam. And third place goes to  Basil Arackal and Abin Thomas of Vimalagiri public School Kothamangalam.   

 In Essay Writing  on the topic  ‘Chemistry for Environment- Friendly Future’ the first place won by V Bella Mary of JNV Neriamangalam ,   Second  place shared by Reshma Roy of  Sobhana Public school Kothamangalam  and Arjun V S of Mar basil HSS  and third place won by Karthik Baiju of Vimalagiri Public School Kothamangalam.

In painting competition on the topic “  Hazards of Environmental Pollution” the first place won by Bapsy Ben of Mar Basil HSS Kothamangalam , second place won by Basilgiri David of Vidya Vikas Pubic Scool Karukadom Muvattupuzha.And third place won by Milita Saju of Mar Basil HSS Kothamangalam.

Two day   “Science Book Exhibition “was conducted in collaboration with Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad on 29^th and 30^th of September 2011.

A Drama based on the life of Madam Curie was staged by the professional troup

of KSSP on 1^st October 2011 in commemoration of the centenary of Marie Curie’s Award  of Nobel Prize  in Chemistry for the discovery of Radium.

A  “Poster Exhibition “  on the history of   Chemistry and eminent scientists was conducted on 2^nd and 3^rd  October 2011.

Two guest lectures were  arranged  on the “Importance of Chemistry in our Life”  by  Dr. Santhosh  , Chemical Engineer FACT Aluva  and  on “Working Human Body”  by Mr. Jithin of Spices Board Idukki.

An interesting workshop in SUPW related with chemical products was conducted on 24^th Nov’ 2011 participating students from neighbouring schools. The students got first hand practical knowledge and technical know-how in the preparation of soap, detergent powder, cleaning powder ,liquid blue and toilet cleaning lotion for household uses.

On our invitation the Kerala Shastra Sahitya Parishad staged an awareness programme on 5^th Dec ‘2011 on protection of environment and heritage of Kerala promoting  sustainable development.

Apart from these events above mentioned, projects in Chemistry related with Environmental Chemistry were also assigned for the students.

The valedictory  function of IYC 2011 celebrations was held on 28^th Dec. with the esteemed presence of the Chief Guest Prof. S SithaRaman ,Coordinator National Green Corps ,Ministry of Environment and Forest.The certificates and prizes for

winners in the  various inter-school competitions were distributed on the occasion.

                                We  express our deep gratitude to all who provided necessary guidelines,encouraged and participated in all these programmes and events and helped the celebration of IYC 2011 a grand success.
